Many of us have locations in our homes where we get a poor Wi-Fi signal, a slow Internet connection or perhaps no service at all. These are called “dead zones.” Since we now use our smartphones, tablets and laptops just about everywhere in our home, often for work, these dead zones can be inconvenient and lessen productivity. They can also interfere with our enjoyment of games, streaming media and video chatting. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to get rid of these dead zones.

Check Your Router

First, make sure that the problem isn’t with your wireless router.

  • A wireless router works best when it’s in a central location and not tucked away in a corner where the signal simply can’t reach some areas.
  • Also make sure that it’s not being obstructed by an object like a filing cabinet that can interfere with the signal.
  • Make sure that the antennas are pointed vertically.
  • Make sure that the firmware on your wireless router is current. Manufacturers often don’t send notices of available firmware updates for home systems, but you can usually download the latest firmware from the manufacturer’s website.
  • You may want to get a Wi-Fi analyzer to find the least congested wireless channel for your network and then change the channel setting on your wireless router.

Extenders, Repeaters and Additional Routers

If none of the aforementioned items are the problem, the easiest method for minimizing or eliminating dead zones may be to install additional wireless access points. These increase the wireless bubble without having to buy a new router.

If you have a multitude of dead zones or your wireless performance just isn’t as good as you’d like it to be, multiple additional wireless access points may be the solution.
